Cubby has wide experience of working on heritage buildings such as churches, public buildings, period homes and a variety of other historically important structures.
The Company was extensively involved in the renovation carried out on Carlisle’s historic Cathedral and has been contracted on a regular basis to manufacture and fit one-of-a-kind timber components on a number of English Heritage properties.
Carlisle Town Hall
A prominent two storey Grade 1 Listed building of Medieval origin, Carlisle’s Old Town Hall mostly dates from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Located in the centre of the city on the Market Square, this splendid building is a much-loved local landmark.
Based on their excellent work on the city’s nearby Cathedral and other local historic buildings, Cubby Construction were contracted to undertake extensive external refurbishment work on the building in 2013. This was followed by a comprehensive renovation of the interior spaces, which included specialist fit-out of a Tourist Information Centre on the first floor which is accessed by a Platform Lift.
The building’s exemplary Grade 1 listing status meant that Cubby had to work in close association with conservation officers and English Heritage to ensure that the historically important fabric of the structure was conserved and repaired in a sympathetic and period-correct manner.
Close attention to detail played a vital role during the works, helping to return the Old Town Hall to a structurally sound condition that will ensure it remains an attractive, functional civic building at the heart of the city and the local community for many years to come.
Carlisle Cathedral
The 12th Century Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity stands at the heart of Carlisle. After almost a thousand years, the magnificent sandstone building was in serious need of renovation to protect its fine stained glass and unique medieval choir stalls. As part of the major restoration and refurbishment programme, Cubby carried out extensive specialist repair and restoration works to areas of stone and timber on the original bell tower.
Thursby Church
Thursby’s St Andrews Church was in a sorry state. A significant fire that occurred in 2009 compounded serious damp problems to both the fabric of the building and its timber. These issues combined with a failing roof and age-worn stonework to result in a complex project that drew on the full spectrum of Cubby’s construction, restoration and remediation capabilities, including complex lead work and slating to the roof, and a broad spectrum of joinery manufacture and fitting.
Worked commenced in January 2012, key considerations were the renewal of the Church’s flexible internal space; removal and re-installation of a number of wall-mounted memorial panels; resolution of damp issues emanating from failing lead work and slates; renewal of the hard wood floor; and final decoration to an exceptional standard.
