Newton Rigg

Cubby has built a solid relationship with the famous agricultural college at Newton Rigg, near Penrith. The college is a respected provider of training in leading-edge farming techniques.

As part of its livestock programme, Newton Rigg invested £2.4m in a superb dairy facility which drew heavily on Cubby’s long experience and impressive attention to detail to deliver what is the most modern dairy facility in the UK.

The completed project combines accommodation for hundreds of cows with 164 milking cubicles and a parlour with capacity for a further 36 dry cows and a number of calving boxes.

The project was developed with environmental issues as a primary consideration and, working in conjunction with the Eden Rivers Trust, Newton Rigg developed a waste water handling solution to minimise run-off contamination that was also delivered by Cubby.

At the heart of this solution is a large-scale settling pond adjacent to the buildings. Excavated, lined and finished by Cubby, it helps ensure that local groundwater remains clean and free from the excess nitrate run- off that results in choking algal growth in watercourses and ponds.
