The Peppermoss and Ringing Flow Forest Roads recently underwent a full upgrade to improve functionality, durability, and sustainability. Commissioned by Forestry England, the works support sustainable forestry and long-term land management goals.
To begin with, Cubby Construction resurfaced both routes using durable materials. This significantly increased their load-bearing capacity for timber lorries and heavy forestry machinery. As a result, the improvements reduce wear and extend the lifespan of the roads.
In addition, overgrown vegetation along the roadsides was cleared. This widened the routes and improved visibility for large vehicles. Consequently, it created safer access for machinery and plant operating in tight forest conditions.
At the same time, ditch clearance was carried out to restore and improve the roads’ existing drainage systems. This step helps reduce erosion and prevents waterlogging during periods of heavy rainfall. Moreover, it supports the long-term integrity of the road surfaces.
A key element of the project involved the installation of new culverts and drainage trenches. These systems effectively divert rainwater away from the road surface. As a result, they protect infrastructure and minimise flood risks to surrounding habitats and ecosystems.
Furthermore, additional turning areas were created. These improvements make it easier for large timber vehicles to manoeuvre safely within the forest. This is especially important for efficient and ongoing forestry operations.
Overall, these upgrades improve operational access, protect critical woodland infrastructure, and reduce environmental impact. Importantly, the project aligns with Forestry England’s objectives to enhance access, promote sustainability, and ensure the usability of the forest network.
In summary, the Peppermoss and Ringing Flow Forest Roads are now more resilient, accessible, and ready to support future forestry activity.
