The A689 is part of Cumbria’s Principal Road Network and runs between Carlisle and the County Boundary.
The particular area of concern in Alston for this project was Front Street, Alston which is paved in sandstone setts. However, in recent years, the Council was forced to take urgent remedial action on safety grounds and remove the setts and resurface stretches of Front Street in bituminous surfacing material.
Restorations of Alston’s unique heritage appeal consisted of the construction of a 30m long section of road in the centre of Front Street opposite the Market Cross.
