Senior Estimator

Do you have experience estimating for large civil engineering tenders?

Due to significant business growth we now have an opportunity for a Senior Estimator within our Pre-contracts Team. Established in 1968, you’ll be joining a company with proven success, clear goals, and a strong commitment to finding the best person for the job!

As the successful Senior Estimator, you will play a pivotal role in the business, helping Cubby Construction secure a wide variety of quality civil engineering projects to add to our portfolio. Being responsible for all aspects of producing accurate and detailed estimates for a variety of tenders received by Cubby Construction, this will include building up tender rates from first principles for all aspects of a project requirement as well as using supply chain input for specific trades and work packages.

You should have experience of a full range of civil engineering projects; Deep Drainage Works, New Road Construction, Existing Road Improvements, Bridge Construction, Public Realm Works, Structural Concrete Works, Coastal Defence Works, Flood Alleviation Works.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the tender from receipt, through to submission and post tender queries;
  • Analyse the tender documents to understand the key project requirements and clients aspirations;
  • Review all tender documents to fully understand the key project risks and opportunities
  • Seek specialist support from the wider Cubby team in relation to the projects insurance requirements, commercial terms, complex temporary works or other specialist technical aspects;
  • Undertake take offs and prepare material enquiries from tender drawings/ works information and specifications;
  • Identify requirement for Bills of Quantities to be prepared and arrange for them to be undertaken;
  • Obtain best value material tender quotations;
  • Prepare Sub-Contractor enquiries from tender drawings, works information and specifications making sure that appropriate levels of risk transfer are included in subcontractor enquiries;
  • Highlight requirement for external design to be undertaken by Structural Engineer or Architect;
  • Ensure ‘Causeway’ estimating package is updated with current rates for plant hire rates and buying information;
  • Carry out site visits to determine nature of works;
  • Communicate effectively with the whole construction team, on delivery dates and any unloading requirements;
  • Estimate labour, plant, material, and time requirements in order to be able to compute the overall tender cost of the project;
  • Keep detailed records and maintaining well-organised work schedules;
  • Prepare and maintain tender reports in order to maximise efficiency within the business;
  • Pro-actively source alternative buying options, creating a robust buying guide to enable accurate quotations
  • Arrange and prepare commercial documents for tender handover meetings;
  • Attend pre-qualification, mid tender and post tender interviews.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Have significant technical expertise and knowledge of Construction Estimating;
  • Commercially aware and capable to carry out financial analysis;
  • Be a self-starter with a strong work ethic, with the ability to consistently meet fixed deadlines;
  • Excellent communication, people skills and ability to communicate at all levels both verbally and in writing;
  • Be flexible and resilient to meet the needs to the business;
  • Able to work on multiple tenders at the same time by prioritising workload;
  • Have a collaborative approach to problem solving;
  • Ensure that communication between all parties is open and honest;
  • Demonstrate and encourage a no-blame culture to ensure review and continuous improvement;

  • Be able to demonstrate knowledge and practical application of planning and construction activities;
  • Be computer literate, ideally have extensive experience of Causeway or similar estimating packages;
  • Be able to demonstrate a high level of construction knowledge
