This initiative was part of a comprehensive endeavour by The Vindolanda Trust, a charitable organisation dedicated to researching, promoting, and facilitating access to the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Sites and associated museums.

Situated adjacent to the significant Roman site of Magna, the Roman Army Museum served as a focal point for a five-year archaeological and geoarchaeological research project generously funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Vindolanda Trust.

The extension to the Roman Army Museum encompassed several key components:

A Multi-Purpose Building Extension: This addition expanded the museum’s gallery space and served as a dynamic hub for various activities and programs aimed at fostering engagement with archaeological endeavours.

The works were required to be completed within a restricted seasonal working window, with in-river activities and bridge installation programmed for early summer 2025 to comply with environmental requirements.

Centre for Archaeological Volunteers: Within the extension, a dedicated area was allocated to facilitate the involvement of archaeological volunteers. This space provided resources and support for volunteers to actively participate in research, excavation, and conservation efforts.

Integrated Visitor Activity Centre: The extension incorporated a linked visitor activity centre, enhancing the overall visitor experience by offering educational and interactive programs that delved into the rich history and archaeology of the region.

Site Office for Archaeological Staff: A functional site office was established within the extension to accommodate the needs of archaeological staff conducting research and overseeing excavation activities. This office served as a central hub for project coordination and administration.

External Infrastructure Enhancement: In addition to the building extension, improvements were made to external infrastructure such as paving and drainage, ensuring a seamless and accessible environment for visitors, volunteers, and staff alike.In addition, fluctuating river levels posed a continual risk, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall. To mitigate the hazards associated with in-river working, pumps were installed and water management measures implemented to maintain safe working conditions throughout the construction phase.

Throughout the planning and design process, careful consideration was given to ensure that the extension to the Roman Army Museum was both economically viable and of the highest quality, reflecting the commitment of The Vindolanda Trust to excellence in archaeological research and public engagement.
